This Day In Hip Hop and Rap History

September 2nd - Kanye West utters his controversial infamous words that “George Bush doesn’t care about Black people” on NBC’s simulcast “A Concert For Hurricane Relief”, on this day in 2005.

The hour-long televised benefit concert was to raise funds for the victims of Hurricane Katrina which hit Florida on August 23rd causing damage and some fatalities but ravaged New Orleans, Louisiana on August 29th flooding 80% of the city, then later causing major property damage in the state of Mississippi.

Almost 2000 fatalities were reported with almost 300 in Mississippi and over 1500 in Louisiana.

West’s remarks were made while he was hosting with actor Mike Myers and were in response to a reported slow response by The Federal Emergency Management Agency and other government response resources to areas that were hit with a large African-American population.

The comments would catch Myers off guard as well as actor-comedian Chris Tucker to whom producers would order cameras panned to after West’s comments.
