This Day In Hip Hop and Rap History

October 23rd – Divine Styler released his debut album, “Word Power”, on Ice-T’s Rhyme $yndicate Records, 25 years ago on this day in 1989.

“Word Power” was produced by Bilal Bashir, Lawrence A. Duhart as well as Styler.

The debut set by the Brooklyn, New York born MC was heavily influenced by the socially conscious and politically-charged hip-hop at the time as evidenced on tracks like, “It’s A Black Thing”, “Koxistin U4ria” and “The Last Black House On The Left”.

“Word Power” spawned the underground hit single “Ain’t Sayin’ Nothin’”.
