This Day In Hip Hop and Rap History

May 4th – MCA, of The Beastie Boys, dies of salivary gland cancer, at age 47, in New York City, on this day in 2012.

In 2009, MCA was diagnosed with a cancerous parotid gland and a lymph node.

His treatments for the disease would delay the release of The Beastie Boys’ new album “Hot Sauce Committee Part Two”, which was eventually released in 2011.

On April 14th 2012, Chuck D and LL Cool J would induct The Beastie Boys into The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame at the annual induction ceremony at the Rock Hall Museum in Cleveland, Ohio.

Sadly, The Beastie Boys would not perform as part of the traditional Rock Hall Induction Jam as MCA was admitted to New York-Presbyterian Hospital earlier in the day as his condition worsened.

Instead, The Roots along with Kid Rock and Travie McCoy would perform some Beastie classics at the ceremony that night.

Mike D and King Ad-Rock would be present however to accept the honor at the Rock Hall and read a statement prepared by MCA.

Three weeks later MCA would succumb to the disease that he gallantly tried hard to fight off.

Music fans around the world were saddened as they got the news of the passing of one of the most innovative artists in the hip-hop and punk genres.

Many in the industry publicly mourned his passing including Chuck D, Russell Simmons, Ben Stiller, Thom Yorke of Radiohead, Eminem, The Black Keys, Linkin Park, Billy Talent and countless others.

MCA and The Beastie Boys are one of the most important figures in hip-hop history.
