This Day In Hip Hop and Rap History

September 17th – Ras Kass releases his debut album, “Soul On Ice” on Priority Records on this day in 1996.

The album’s title was a reference to the 1968 book of the same name by Black Panther Party Minister Of Information Eldridge Cleaver.

Kass’ debut set would be a hip-hop manifesto of the Black struggle in the 1990’s and its relation to the turbulent 1960’s.

Rass Kass, who at the time was a member of the super-group Golden State Warriors along with Xzibit and Saafir, produced “Soul On Ice” along with Battlecat, Bird, Voodu and others.

Coolio would be the only guest on the album, appearing on the track “Drama”.

The controversial album cut “Nature Of The Threat”, despite not being released as a single, drew lots of attention because of its political content.

“Soul On Ice” contained the hit singles, “Miami Life”, “Anything Goes” and the powerful title track.
