This Day In Hip Hop and Rap History

August 6th – Yo ! MTV Raps makes it debut on MTV , on this day in 1988.

The week day edition of the rap music video show is hosted by Fab 5 Freddy and the weekend edition by Doctor Dre And Ed Lover.

Run-DMC hosted the pilot episode. The guests on that episode were DJ Jazzy Jeff And The Fresh Prince. The first music video shown on that pilot was “Follow The Leader” by Eric B. And Rakim. The pilot was one of the highest rated programs in MTV history right after Live Aid and the Video Music Awards.

The first music video shown during the first regular season episode was “Chain Gang” by Shinehead. “Yo! MTV Raps” took it’s name from Public Enemy’s 1987 debut album “Yo! Bum Rush The Show”. Guests on “Yo! MTV Raps over the years included 2Pac Shakur , N.W.A. , Public Enemy , Boogie Down Productions , M.C. Hammer , Leaders Of The New School featuring a young Busta Rhymes , Ice Cube and The Wu-Tang Clan.

Ratings for “Yo! MTV Raps” started to fall in 1991 after MTV pulled the video for Public Enemy’s “By The Time I Get To Arizona” from their 1991 album “Apocalypse ‘91” – The Enemy Strikes Black , with MTV claiming it was too violent. “Yo! MTV Raps” aired it’s last episode on Aug.17th – 1995 with an all-star freestyle that included KRS-One , Rakim , Chubb Rock , Erick Sermon , MC Serch of 3rd Bass , Craig Mack , Method Man , Redman , Extra P. and Special Ed.
