This Day In Hip Hop and Rap History

April 10th – Public Enemy release their third album, the chart topping, platinum selling “Fear Of A Black Planet”, on this day in 1990.

The album considered by many as the magnum opus of hip-hop recordings would sell one million copies in its first week.

“Fear Of A Black Planet” would contain no less than eight hit singles; “Fight The Power”, also featured in the classic Spike Lee film “Do The Right Thing” released the previous summer, “Welcome To The Terrordome”, “911 Is A Joke”, “Brothers Gonna Work It Out”, “Can’t Do Nuthin’ For Ya Man”, also featured in the films “House Party” and “Jungle Fever”, “Burn Hollywood Burn” (featuring Ice Cube and Big Daddy Kane), “Anti ‘N’ Machine” and “Revolutionary Generation.”

“Fear Of A Black Planet” also featured cult album fan favorite tracks like “Meet The “G” That Killed Me”, “Pollywanacraka”, “War At 33 1/3”, and an older track dusted off from the vaults called “B Side Wins Again” (previously a b-side of “Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos” off of 1988’s “It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back”, and the controversial title track.

In 2004, The Library Of Congress added the album to the National Recording Registry.

The album was influenced by Dr. Frances Cress Welsing’s 1970’s essay “The Cress Theory Of Color-Confrontation And Racism (White Supremacy).”

“Fear Of A Black Planet” was the last album produced solely by the original Bomb Squad team consisting of Hank and Keith Shocklee, Eric “Vietnam” Sadler and Yours Truly Chuck D.
