This Day In Hip Hop and Rap History

April 5th – Kid of Kid ‘N’ Play was born Christopher Reid in The Bronx, New York, on this day in 1964.

Kid met future partner Play as a teen while the two were in rival groups. Kid at the time was known as Kid Coolout when he was a member of The Turnout Brothers. Play, at the time, was a member of The Super Lovers along with future super-producer Herby “Luv Bug” Azor, who would go on to produce hit records for Salt ‘N’ Pepa and Kid ‘N’ Play.

The two eventually joined forces and formed The Fresh Force Crew. They later became known simply as Kid “N’ Play, with Kid dropping the Coolout from his name.

Kid ‘N Play released three albums throughout their career; 1988’s “2 Hype”, which spawned the hit title track, 1990’s “Funhouse”, which also produced a chart topping title track and 1991’s “Face The Nation”, which produced their last big hit called “Ain’t Gonna Hurt Nobody.”

The duo was also featured on an NBC Saturday morning cartoon called “Kid ‘N’ Play” which ran for the 1990-91 season.

Marvel Comics then published nine issues based on the NBC cartoon.

Kid ‘N’ Play however would achieve their biggest success on the silver screen. 1990’s “House Party”, 1991’s “House Party 2” and 1994’s “House Party 3” were bona fide hip-hop classic flicks and helped to launch the careers of the production and directing team of the Huddling Brothers in the process.

The duo also starred in the 1992 Warner Bros. comedy feature “Class Act.”

The duo went their separate ways in the mid-1990’s.

Kid best known in Kid ‘N’ Play’s heyday for his high-top fade and the “Kid ‘N’ Play Kickstep Dance” which he would perform with partner Play, eventually went into stand-up comedy, with his career being managed by controversial television host and commentator Bill Maher.

Kid has also appeared on several sitcoms like “Martin” and “Sister, Sister” to name a few. Kid continues to record music, act and perform stand-up comedy today.
