editorial Thanks to a new technology called DivX, the Web
will soon be awash in illegal--but perfect--copies of Hollywood
blockbuters.
If you think online music-sharing software like
Napster and MP3 are causing a fuss, wait
about six months.

Digital Music: Problems
and Possibilities category: News submitted by grossman (May 12, 2000 at
10:20:25) Posted by: grossman Someone at Harvard is
spending far too much time thinking
about the digital music
revolution...fortunately!
This essay attempts to sort out
the legal issues presented by this new technology (MP3). Section II
catalogues its social advantages and disadvantages. Section III
analyzes the various legal challenges that have been or might be
brought against users of the new technology. Section IV suggests
some ways in which the legal and business landscape might be
reconfigured to handle better the combination of opportunities and
dangers presented by the new technology.

Napster May Have Weak
Defense category: News submitted by mp3.com editorial (May 12, 2000 at
09:26:22) Posted by: NewsHacks Pencils, copy
machines and VCRs are perfectly legal products, even though an
unscrupulous few may abuse them to illegally duplicate copyrighted
material. That simple legal principle is likely to be the major
defense offered up by Napster, but will it win the day at the
upcoming Napster trial?
Not
likely, some experts say.

09:24:30) Posted by: NewsHacks One day after more
than 300,000 people where bounced off of the file-trading
application, there's plenty of advice and specific directions on how to get
back onto Napster. Most can be found on the company's own
message boards.

WASHINGTON, May 11, 2000 --Walt Disney, owner of the ABC
TV network, asked U.S. regulators to impose significant
conditions on America Online's proposed $139 billion purchase of
Time Warner.
Disney told the U.S. Federal Communications
Commission in a filing late today that the merged AOL Time Warner
should be "unequivocally" prohibited from discriminating against

thanks mp3 category: MP3.com submitted by Anonymous (May 12, 2000 at
09:07:34) Posted by: NewsHacks If it wasn't for
mp3.com it would be very hard for a beginning artist to be heard. In
the gospel music ministry, we want people to here our songs and mp3
has given that to us . just try to find a record company that will
allow you free publicity.
highly unlikely!!!
THANK
YOU FOR THE WEBSITE AND THE ABILITY TO BE HEARD ON THE INTERNET.

How much do artists make
off a CD? category: Music submitted by Anonymous (May 12, 2000 at
09:05:55) Posted by: NewsHacks Just wondering
exactly how much of a percentage they get of the final record price
($14 - $18).
I want to see just how much an individual song
would cost if you just paid the artist directly. Cause even at
retail it only costs about a dollar per song. I would be more than
happy to give 25-50 cents directly to the artist rather than the
record company. Especialy if it ensured that the song i got was the
complete song and the version/bitrate/sampling freq/etc i
wanted.
Also i [...continued]

Metallica-Only Version
of Napster category: Gossip submitted by NewsHacks
(May 11, 2000 at 16:00:39) Posted by: NewsHacks Probably just vapor, but still
interesting... Boy are they gonna love this...!!! For several
months now a small team of programmers have been working on a
napster clone following the trend of many other software developers.
Unlike them, the aim was not to add another crappy copy of an
already fine application onto the web to earn loads of cash from
further confused folk like you and me wondering which program to
choose! Instead, they were in the pursuit of knowledge, wanting to
understand the technicalities of the file transfer
system [...continued]

| Rant
|
| How It Works: Based on
feedback from users, we're continuing to make some changes and add
features to the recently overhauled MP3.com News section. Things you
may have noticed:
"Flat" and "Outline" display option on the message boards. You
now have the ability to view the message boards flat, which makes
the board appear similar to other
message boards at MP3.com. If you prefer the outlined view, that
option remains. Just select your preference ("flat" or "outline")
from the message board tool bar and click on "change." The idea is
to let you customize these boards to suit your viewing needs and
habits.
Funny log in when you want to add a story. Currently, users must
log in through My.MP3.com in order to post on message boards or add
a story. You will still need to log in before posting, but we are
working on a process that will be less confusing for new users. This
change will take effect soon.
That is all for now, comrades. If you have further questions,
please check out our Help section.
